FTNON Coring machine
for Iceberg lettuce
Removing the core of Iceberg lettuce is a difficult and labour intensive task. Until today, coring has always been done by hand. Now, however, Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland B.V. (FTNON) has successfully concluded the development of an automatic Iceberg lettuce coring machine.
In this novel installation the head of Iceberg lettuce is placed manually on a form chute with the core downwards. After laying on, the installation then indexes to the next position automatically. The form chute consists of four segments or more with an opening in the middle, through which the cutter unit moves upwards. For the coring process the head of Iceberg lettuce is fixed by a special crown which is provided with a mechanically adjustable end touch bar. The cutting depth and cutting diameter are defined by the position of the cutter unit, which is adjusted manually. This makes it possible to core only that part which actually needs to be removed.
The processed head of Iceberg lettuce falls on to a discharge belt. The coring waste is caught in a chute and discharged.
